The most exciting thing to happen in a LONG time has been my involvement with the production of School of Rock at the Curran Theater in San Francisco. What an amazing show that was! Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber granted the premiere amateur production rights to local public school Oakland School for the Arts. This means that, while the Broadway production was happening, a lucky bunch of West Coast middle and high school students were able to also perform this show.

As if that wasn't fun enough, a select group of talented and dedicated students in my Production Design department at OSA got to design the sets, lighting, sound, costumes, hair, and makeup! This was truly a case of life imitating art.
The absolute highlight was working at the Curran Theater, which was built in 1922 and has been home to some of the most amazing performances and actors of our time.
They created and hand-painted custom tattoos, built specialized costume components such as a specific walkie talkie for a cop costume, and devised creative solutions to multiple issues that popped up along the way. All told, we had 35 actors, 75 costumes, and so many concurrent quick changes that it would make your head spin! I simply made a small heart template out of cardboard, and used it to cut hearts out of different sorts of materials from my scraps. You may have guessed it… I used some leather, some denim, some knit, and the base of the cushion is made out of medium weight cottons. When I pull out a specialty needle, I will simply stick it in the heart that corresponds to its recommended fabric!

This is my favorite piece of fabric, which I found while doing birthday shopping at a fabulous vintage fabric store in Point Richmond. There was only an odd-sized remnant, roughly 1 1/3 yards on one side and a bit longer on the other.

Today is the day I muster all my sewing mojo and finally cut into it! It's going to be my third version of Gertie's Bow Tie blouse. I found great vintage buttons to match in my stash, from a scavenging trip to the Mysterious Button store. Wish me luck!

In other news, I revisited my abject failure, otherwise known as Simplicity 1692. Whoever drafted all those godforsaken pleats needs a firm talking to. I ripped the Sleeves Full of Poof off and added bias facing, after which I detached the collar and took out all the Random Boobie Poof by stitching down all that excess fabric.

I basted vintage lace to my black bias facing prior to attaching it as the new collar. Then I added a buttonhole and a self-covered button for the back closure.

Would anyone be interested in a vintage pattern giveaway? I have a LOT of patterns and want to share the wealth. Do you have suggestions of what types of patterns should be included? I have a lot of fit & flare dresses, sheaths, coats, skirts...
A year ago. He has trouble finding shirts that fit, as he is 6'3" with broad shoulders and long arms from years of surfing and a slim build. Off the rack shirts fit his shoulders but billowed around his middle, or he always had to roll his sleeves to conceal how short they were. He was dutifully measured, questioned, and sent to buy fabric. Did I mention he has fantastic and expensive taste? He came back with yards of the softest white Egyptian cotton from Britex in SF, thinking it would be such a treat for me to sew such otherworldly fabric.

Uh....the receipt fell out of the bag when I was unpacking his fabric, and I had a panic attack. He wanted me to cut into THIS?! Oh good grief. I was scared to touch it, for fear of making a tiny mark and just general fear of screwing the whole thing up. Also, once I mustered up the courage to try, ALL my chalk marks were visible from the right side and I was fearful that they might not wash out all the way afterward. This is SERIOUSLY sheer cotton! And even though I had made a muslin, there were enough fiddly bits to alter that I was, shall we say, a bit nervous.

So it's not a surprise that this project sat for a bit, oh, say thirteen months or so! He gave up asking about it after six months, nice guy that he is. Meanwhile, the guilt was killing me! So, just in time for his birthday on June 26th, I bought the Colette Negroni pattern and used some blue cotton oxford cloth I has thrifted months earlier and whipped up a shirt for him in about ten days. I used his earlier measurements and did some alterations (without fear, I might add, as I have about two yards of fabric left over). The sleeve packets were a bitch, but I religiously referred to the Male Pattern Boldness sewalong and made it through.

Anyway, here it is. Sadly, I don't have photos of him actually wearing it, yet, but I hope to post one soon. It fit great, although it was a little long for his taste.

On a recent trip I found the following items that will be so useful in my sewing studio:

First, I picked up fine grade sandpaper for all of 87 cents so I can sharpen my scissors. I just make small parallel cuts so that my snips are sharp and crisp.

Next I grabbed big rolls of craft paper for $2.79 to trace my patterns. I keep my paper patterns rolled into old cardboard tubes from toilet paper and paper towels, with details written on the tube to make everything easy to find.

This is one of my favorite tools. It's a retractable piece of string that is pre-chalked. You simply pull it out, line it up, and give it a little flick. It then deposits its chalk on the straight line. Fantastic! It makes tracing vintage patterns so much easier, at least all those with straight lines! The metal canister is refillable and chalk comes in red, blue, and yellow. Test your fabrics to ensure it washes out first!

I love love love these flat round washers for pattern weights! Between travel, family health issues and construction on a new deck, I haven't posted in quite a bit. I'm back though, with a fantastic new tool to recommend. It didn't even come from the notions aisle!

Please meet the wrapping paper cutting tool from the Scotch Company. I purchased this during the holidays to help wrap gifts in a hurry, but just recently realized it could be used to cut patterns too! I've been pretty good at tracing my patterns (although you wouldn't know it from the photos) and this little razor cuts through heavy craft paper as well as delicate pattern tissue.
I cut a small snip to get it started, then switch to this tool to just zoom right through my big straight cuts. So fast and so fun!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Romy (evilincarKnit)http://www.blogger.com/profile/00138953289559164974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031138297136332984.post-83544623247844308502013-03-01T22:45:00.001-08:002013-03-01T22:50:02.262-08:00Vintage Patterns Galore!It was my lucky day when I heard that an accomplished local seamstress was downsizing her pattern stash, and wanted to give away her boxes and boxes of meticulously preserved patterns. Once again Susannah and I piled into my trusty old car and headed on the freeway, off on a sewing adventure!

When we arrived we met Elliot, who was handling the distribution of his cousin's amazing collection. I hope he realizes what a gift he is giving the sewing community by not just tossing these envelopes out! Susannah and I dove right in to all the neatly organized boxes not knowing what we'd find, but with anticipation and enthusiasm.

And behold, we found gorgeous patterns from the 60s, and even one or two from the 50s, and marveled at the elegance of a bygone age in our country's history. People were just so suave in their dress in those days! No one shlomped around in nasty sweatpants and bedroom slippers. No one's bra straps were bedazzled and no one's pants sagged. Folks presented themselves in a way designed to evoke respect and a sense of decorum.

Anyway, it was a fantastic experience and I can't wait to get started reproducing these lovely items, whereupon I shall swoon about pretending I'm Babe Paley trading bons mots with Truman Capote. Here are some photos of a few patterns, but I literally have two cardboard boxes full of patterns from today!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Romy (evilincarKnit)http://www.blogger.com/profile/00138953289559164974noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031138297136332984.post-53096326451781246562013-02-16T13:48:00.000-08:002013-02-16T13:48:28.409-08:00Easy Zipper Bag TutorialI'm heading out to Florida, to sail on the Gulf of Mexico for a week, so I thought I'd leave you with this tutorial. Zipper bags are a great gift for travelers, and they're a nice way to make even the smallest trip seem really special.

First step, pick your fabrics! You will need an exterior fabric (in my case, the chicken print!) and an interior fabric (the grey floral print, below). You will also need a zipper. Don't worry about the zipper - I promise, this is EASY!

Cut your fabrics all to the same size, roughly whatever you want the size of the finished bag to be. I picked 8 x 9 inches, but knock yourself out! Whatever size you pick, make sure the zipper you use is long enough for the opening. It's okay if it's too long, as you can cut it down to size, but too short will be problematic.

Two outer squares, two liner squares, and a zipper!

ENTIRELY OPTIONAL:
You may notice that I added a little pocket to one of my liner squares. This is easy - just cut out a square from either fabric ( I used the outer fabric, for contrast) and iron the edges under about 1/4" on three sides. These will be your sides and bottom. For the top of the pocket, iron down 1/4" and then another 1/2" and sew a nice line to hold that fold in place. Then, pin the pocket where you want it (see photo) and stitch from one side, across the bottom, and back up the other side, backtacking at start and finish to prevent unraveling.
What I like to do, to keep it all looking professional, is to flip the liner over to the wrong side and pull the threads through. Just pull on the one thread that's already there till you see the little teeny loop of the other thread poking its head up, stick a pin in the loop, and yank that sucker on up!
OK, now the real fun begins. You are going to make a zipper sandwich! Lay your lining fabric down on the table, pretty side up. Then lay your zipper, functional side up. Last, put your outer fabric, pretty side down. IF YOUR FABRIC HAS A DIRECTION, now is the time to make sure the 'top' side is pointing toward the zipper. Line up your edges (see photo) and pin.

This next bit is where you sew the flappy bits into their own bags, one on each side of the zipper. The last step is where you turn the whole thing inside out and it turns into a fantastic zippered bag!

For this step, open the flaps and lay the liner fabrics together and the exterior fabrics together, right sides touching and zipper in the middle. It should look something like this:

At this part, your zipper will be a wobbly bit in the middle. Be sure it is UNZIPPED about three-fourths of the way. If you unzip it all the way, the head will get in the way of your stitching, and it if you don't unzip it, you'll have a big pain in the tushie trying to turn your bag inside out at the end.
Fold your zipper tape together nice and flat, and pin away from the main fabric, toward the lining side.
You will want to start sewing at least an inch or two before the zipper,
on the liner side, sew all the way around the rectangle going around
all the corners, and end up about two inches away from where you
started. Stop there, so you have a little hole to turn it inside out at
the end.

ENTIRELY OPTIONAL, PART TWO:
If you want to be super fancy, ou can box the corners of both the exterior and liner fabric, to give extra 3D capacity once it's full of your gear. Pinch the corners so that the stitch lines meet in the middle and a little triangle is formed.

Measure in from the pivot point of your stitching (aka the corner) anywhere from 1/2" to 1", depending on how big you want the bottom to be. Draw a line. Make this same measurement on all four corners, pin, and sew 'em up!
Before you go getting too crazy, there's one teeny little last bit. Pin that escape hatch closed and sew it up tight. Just run it through your machine, being sure to backtack at start and finish. I like to use a really short stitch length for the backtacking, so I can just snip the ends and know it won't unravel.

First, I have to say that Heather Ross is so kind and mellow, and I would definitely take another workshop of hers. It can't be easy planning for a group of folks at a multitude of skill levels and with varied interests, and she absolutely pulled off a coup. She signed books -and drew in them!- and was unfailingly positive and patient.

Heather explains it all.

As mentioned earlier, the fellow workshop attendees were just
fantastic. Here's a shot of Lauren, who absolutely needs to start her
own blog, and a room photo so y'all can see how huge the space was.

My
new buds Ruth and Sheetal joined Susannah and me and another crafty sewist for a lovely lunch on
Saturday in Pacific Grove at the Red House Cafe. I somehow missed
getting a photo of Leisa, but I got to sit right next to her the whole
time and watch her amazing progress on Heather's wrap skirt pattern.

do we look cold? it was cold.

The
biggest thrill for me came from meeting one of my principal sources of
sewing inspiration: Gretchen Hirsch, better known as Gertie, of the
amazingly popular sewing blog and best-selling book. Oh my gosh. She's
even cooler in person, her hair is even more vibrantly pink, and she's
just got such a great perspective on things. Good lord, the woman even
plays the ukelele, how much more unapologetically badass can you get?!
If you were to surmise that I may have inadvertently peed my pants when
she asked for a ride to the San Francisco airport, you would be correct,
metaphorically speaking of course. Susannah and I were jumping around like ten
year olds at at One Direction concert, we were so thrilled at the
thought of, you know, just Hanging Out all casual-like. I can only hope
we didn't scare her off for good. I didn't take photos of us shopping at
Harts Fabric together, because even a fangirl like me draws the line somewhere, but it
was pretty freaking cool.

lots of projects that had frustrated me previously and make a lovely

I think my head is still spinning from meeting so many awesome new friends, if not from the hairpin turns on the drive home. I'll have more photos to upload soon, but let's just start with one of the biggest highlights of the trip, below.

Yes, that is the gorgeous and funny Gretchen Hirsch with Susannah and me...we picked up a hitchhiker for the return trip! She is just as awesome in real life as you expect she would be from her blog, and twice as beautiful. We were thrilled to go shopping at Hart's Fabrics with the master sewist and to get a glimpse at what she might be making next. Also, she was sweet enough to take us to lunch/dinner in Santa Cruz to say thanks for the ride (as if we wouldn't have paid HER for the sheer awesomeness of it all!).

I returned home with an extra Janome machine and a renewed focus on teaching small, individualized sewing classes. I'll be posting a schedule soon, so if anyone is interested, let me know!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Romy (evilincarKnit)http://www.blogger.com/profile/00138953289559164974noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031138297136332984.post-9298759767058766662013-02-02T00:30:00.001-08:002013-02-02T00:30:54.002-08:00Asilomar Weekend!Oh happy day, Susannah and I are finally here for the Heather Ross/Gretchen Hirsch sewing retreat! We only left Kensington an hour late which -if you know us- is hardly late at all! Made it to Saturn Cafe in Santa Cruz for lunch, see the face of eager anticipation below!

Then we made it to Hart's fabric store...the most awesome store EH.VAH. Seriously, every bolt was the best thing you'd ever seen. I'll post photos after I make the gifts that my fabric purchases are meant to be. Susannah found a fab grey with fuchsia print that is just so her!

The sewing camp gals all seem super nice and supportive. We have a huge room to work in and lots of muslin, carbon paper, and yards upon yards of pretty fabric to look at. Lauren came in from Texas, Katrina from Alabama, and someone else from Boston! Lots of local peeps also, from the Bay Area and further north like Nevada City and Newcastle. A lot of folks are knitters too...they seem to be pretty sympathetic disciplines.

And now to get some shut eye for the big sewing marathon tomorrow!
He inherited it from someone who was going to make a dress for a 52nd birthday party (hah hah, 52nd birthday, 52 cards in a deck), but never got around to it, so now it's MINE ALL MINE BWA-HAHA!!!

I'm thinking it'll be a fitted bodice dress with black piping somewhere (of course!), black Peter Pan collar and turned back cuffs. Maybe I'll go a little wacky and use the 3D dice buttons I found at the El Cerrito Mystery Button store!

Any other suggestions? I've always hoped to have a space to teach others the fascination with needle and thread, and although using my dining room isn't a long term solution (read: kicked my family out of the house for four hours!), it was a fantastic start.

Here are a few shots of my setup - sample garments to be perused, sewing books and magazines, vintage patterns, and Matilda the dress form proudly modeling the class project. Pity I didn't get a photo of the goodie bags, as they were pretty dang cute if I do say so myself. Each student had a commercial pattern, sample fabrics and pins of different sizes, freezer paper squares, and an eight page booklet I made specially for the class.

Look at them working away. So cute! Everyone had different levels of experience coming into the class, and I think everyone picked up at least one new skill by the time they left, plus they had completed (most of them!) an adorable apron. And look at the fabrics they picked out! Do these ladies have great taste or what?!

I have another class coming up on March 3rd, which will focus more on household sewing. You know, curtains, hemming pants, making pillows and the like. Now to dream up a fun class project!

Also, in other news, my bestie Susannah and I are heading to Carmel on Friday to have the experience of a lifetime! We scored the last two spots at the Asilomar Sewing weekend with Gretchen 'Gertie' Hirsch and Heather Ross! As a longtime fan/stalker of Gertie's, I can't believe this is really happening, but I'm trying to overcome the heart palpitations and instead focus on packing an awesome project so I can utilize my time with these sewing goddesses to the fullest. Plus, I'm making a fabulous blouse from Gertie's book to wear while I'm there. Is it creepy to ask her to sign it?!

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjlTgHtwcsKCvNxzCULBjyUfKlDK1aYoTcN1EenRDL6Lx0LUv8cul9ThQ5bIX8qkLQ69EQ4J6zbJmPBqM8TMFGywjrNL5A7IsnejVQF1DFbpLBIv7NWI1NNpdY02qQJ8i7Jtqk7bGBmC85/s640/blogger-image--1580800347.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; No intervention needed, thank you, spring is just so tantalizingly close and I guess I hope that it will come faster if I have a bunch of pretty new frocks to wear!

It helps that my friend Stephanie kindly passed on a box - a WHOLE BOX - of her mother' s vintage patterns and I'm just dying to make some of them. It also helps that I meet some of my sewing idols next week and I want to have a slew of lovely new things with which to impress ( I can admit it!) . But mostly, I'm just feeling creatively on fire right now and it's awesome!
I took it to the repair shop and bought a power cord/ foot pedal and a few feet (piping, Teflon, invisible zip, between $6-$10 each) and it's good to go! Nice stitch definition, hums along powerfully, and the repair guy gave it a quick free once-over. It's a Singer Merritt 3314 and seems to be of the late 80s/early 90s oeuvre.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm especially thrilled, as I had an appointment to look at a vintage Bernina later on today, which I promptly canceled. It seemed a pretty clear message from above, right?! When the powers that be pop a handsome cast iron, made in Brazil, fully functional machine in your way, you take it and run!

Call me crazy, but I'm thinking of painting it a nice robin's egg blue...

Also, while in the repair shop, I saw an ADORABLE Singer Genie. Have you seen these things? Here are some images I found on eBay, below.

So perfectly 70s, its case just slides right on from the side. Groovy baby, yeah! I sure don't need another machine, but let's just say I'll be eyeing the bushes by JoAnn's with vigor, hoping the ghost of Isaac Singer sees fit to drop one of those babies my way!
I found Simplicity 1927 on sale for $1 at my trusty JoAnn Fabric store located just a mile away and this fun cherry gingham print for 40% off. I cut the 8 in the bodice and 10 in the length for my little beanpole. It ended up being a trifle snug on my test model, but thankfully the actual birthday girl is quite a bit more slender.

It came together pretty easily. I cut and sewed all in one day with time to scrub my house in the middle, and am just finishing tacking down the facings. Hope she likes it! I'm giving it to her tomorrow when my second dad takes the whole family to see the Harlem Globetrotters in Oakland with a Fenton's chaser.
I think I just peed my pants I'm so excited!
I'm such a big fan of them both, I remember grabbing 'Weekend Sewing' hot off the press in 2009 and skipping off to work my way through Heather's projects. Also, I used her pj pants pattern when I cranked out 11, yes count'em 11 pairs as gifts this past holiday season. It's like the magic fit that works on everyone! And Gertie, well, let's just say that she's at the top of my bookmarks for a reason! I love the bow tie blouse I made from her book and just bought and washed some lovely floral cotton to make another.
Anyway, my friend Susannah and I are heading to lovely Carmel to stay at our kind and gracious friend Kelly's vacation house during the workshop, since all the spots at Asilomar were booked (hello, late to the party!). We are considering which HR/GH patterns to make in the coming weeks so we'll have something fun to wear while we're there, too! NOT the pj pants, I'm juuuust a little over those for now!Romy (evilincarKnit)http://www.blogger.com/profile/00138953289559164974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031138297136332984.post-53313623916316611362013-01-17T18:34:00.001-08:002013-01-23T00:25:43.110-08:00More CambieOk, so I installed the zipper and lining and now I love the cut of this dress! Once I realized I could fluff out and tack down the sleeves to cover that oh-so attractive bit of armpit pudge, I was on like donkey kong. Here's a crap photo, taken by a nine year old so no hating! :)
Also a close up of how *perfectly* aligned the piping is on the back, cause a girl's gotta brag sometime!
I've had the pattern for a few months, but it never really felt compelling enough to set aside my known tried and true patterns for an unknown.
So, here it is thus far. I have to brave our arctic Northern California cold snap to try it on sometime! Seriously, it stayed in the 40s all day and I'm freezing my butt off. I can't deal with removing my 47 layers to check the fit, but I'm dreaming of spring enough to want a cotton dress.
As far as the pattern goes, I cut a six and removed a lot of the volume of the version B full skirt. I've had three yards of this fun print in my stash for awhile and didn't nearly use it all. Not sure how well I like the finished product, it's a little twee for my usual style. Might have to rip out the piped waistband and shorten the bodice. I flaked out on lining fabric though, so If i stick with this, I might just have to draft a sleeve and collar facing instead. Wish me luck!
I have a few studio days planned, look for inventory to hit at Urbanity soon, and we might have a new vendor lined up soon.
Democracy cannot be bought by billionaires.
I'm happy to say my Democrat dress was a big hit! Pictures were taken and - most importantly - it started conversations with the folks whose doors I was knocking on. I'm gearing up for another round today!<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Romy (evilincarKnit)http://www.blogger.com/profile/00138953289559164974noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4031138297136332984.post-86916747855355412252012-10-25T16:34:00.001-07:002013-01-27T23:16:09.427-08:00Kicking Ass!It's no secret that I'm a diehard Democrat. In fact, when a college prof accused me of being a bleeding heart liberal, my response was, 'you say that like it's a bad thing!' My mom and I are headed to Nevada next week to do some ass-kicking, or literally to remind other registered Democrats to get out and vote!
